Salary Negotiation

For many people requesting a change in their salary is uncomfortable. They go into the scenario unplanned which offers a slim chance of the person having a positive outcome from the meeting. There is no point in trying to hint, discuss informally or threaten to resign to try to get a result- these techniques will not work.

Researching the market and gaining a thorough understanding will enable you to base your request on more than just personal opinion but make sure you are aware that the figures reported will be an average and should be treated as guidance figures not fact.

Not all salary increases can be agreed instantly and you must listen to your employers reasoning as to why this is and discuss when you can expect improvements. Your requested rise must take into consideration the two elements of your position with the company, as an individual and as an employee carrying out the functional role. Be aware that your employer may feel you have already reached the limit of your value to the business in the role you currently perform in.

As an individual in the company you may not yet have reached your potential and a new position may be the only chance you have to increase your monetary worth. Remember that the cost of replacing a current employee or the loss of a member of staff within a critical role can have detrimental consequences to an employer both financially and resourcefully.
